Scholarship Fund in Memory of Beloved Teacher
A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Sherry Buford, former sixth grade math teacher at Oxford Intermediate School who died in a tragic car accident in February 2018. The fund has been set up by CREATE, North Mississippi’s Community Foundation and is managing the fund. Donations can be made online and are tax deductible.
“We are in the early stages, but our hope is to award a scholarship to a senior at Oxford High School and a senior at Lafayette High School beginning next year. We all know how passionate Ms. Buford was about her students and her job. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor her memory than to help students continue their education,” said Joanne McGehee, sixth grade science teacher at Oxford Intermediate School and colleague of Buford’s.
Buford, the Lafayette County native, was 46 years old, a graduate of Lafayette County High School and the University of Mississippi. She taught at the Oxford School District since 2005. Buford’s family remains active in the Abbeville community.
