What to Expect Now That Chucky Mullins Road Is Closed

Spring has sprung and Oxford locals have been greeted with lots of rain and several construction projects. One project, the closure of Chucky Mullins Road south of Highway 6, has sparked traffic concerns for daily commuters.
The road closed last week due to construction of Ole Miss’ South Campus Recreation Center.
Ole Miss student Allie King said she struggles with finding new alternative routes to campus.
“I live on that side of town and it’s made my commute to campus a lot longer,” King said. “I regularly go to Whirlpool Trails, and it’s made me have to find a new way to get there every time.”
Mike Harris, director of Parking and Transportation, said the area is expected to undergo a lot of change.
“The project is scheduled to be completed in January 2019,” Harris said. “At that point, there will be a new Chucky Mullins Road that runs to the north of the construction project and comes around the east, and then connects over to Old Taylor. A red light will be put in where Chucky Mullins comes out on Old Taylor.”
With traffic taking an additional 10 to 15 minutes on Old Taylor Road, the Parking and Transportation Department is taking additional steps to help traffic flow until the completion of the project.
A new Green Route for the O.U.T. buses will be implemented to run through the old Chucky Mullins parking lot. Routing buses back down Chucky Mullins will keep them on schedule and keep them from backing up traffic on Old Taylor Road.
“By the end of April, we should have that Green Route re-routed again just to the south of where Whirlpool is now, so that should come back online,” Harris said.

Until the road reopens in January, 2019, Harris asks that people be patient during construction.
