The No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels return to the diamond this evening as they step out of conference play to take on the No. 12 Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Ole Miss (27-6) looks to bounce back from their first series loss of the season to in-state rival Mississippi State over the weekend. The Rebels drop to No. 4 in the nation (Perfect Game) and No. 5 in D1Baseball.
Rebels’ third baseman, Tyler Keenan, was named SEC Freshman of the Week Monday for the second straight week after tallying six hits, including a towering home run that cleared the right-field seating at Dudy Noble Field in Game 3 at Mississippi State. Keenan scored four runs and drove in three, including the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. The Rebel third baseman also turned a 5U3 double play to end the fourth inning and help Ole Miss escape a two-on, one-out jam. On Wednesday, Keenan also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored against Memphis.
Ole Miss left fielder Thomas Dillard had a tremendous week for the Rebs, scoring five runs and driving in five more. He added a dazzling defensive play, making a sliding grab at the warning track that kept the game alive for Ole Miss in the bottom of the 10th in Game 3 at Mississippi State.
Southern Miss (22-9) enters the game after a series victory over Western Kentucky. The Golden Eagles are a balanced team with .290 collective batting average and 3.64 team ERA.
USM is led offensively by the trio of Luke Reynolds, Matt Wallner and Hunter Slater, each hitting .355. Wallner leads the club with eight home runs and 39 RBIs.
The Golden Eagles offensively are in the Top 20 in the nation in home runs, OBP and walks drawn.
Ole Miss and Southern Miss have met on the diamond 125 times prior to this evening with the Rebels holding a 75-50 advantage in the all-time series. Earlier this season, Ole Miss overcame an early 5-0 deficit to pick up the 7-5 win.
The probable pitching matchup for this midweek slate will have RHP Houston Roth on the mound for the Rebels. Roth is 4-0 on the year with a 4.00 ERA in 36.0 innings of work. Southern Miss will send to the hill RHP J.C. Keys. Keys is 2-2 on the season with a 6.26 ERA.
Fans can listen to all the action on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
