Rebels Head into a New Era under Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin
Ole Miss introduced Yolett McPhee-McCuin as the newest head women’s basketball coach for the Rebels on Friday morning.
“Coach Yo is a proven winner,” Director of Athletics Ross Bjork said. “She is a recruiting machine, she develops players, and these interpersonal relationships that she will develop with our team is a must in college athletics today. [McPhee-McCuin] cares about academics and is disciplined she has a passion and integrity and above all, she is a leader.
McPhee-McCuin becomes the ninth coach in the program history. She arrived at Ole Miss after a five-year stint at Jacksonville University where she led the Dolphins to a 94-63 record (50-24 in ASUN play) and postseason appearances in each of her last three seasons.
“The number one goal for our program is to be better every day,” McPhee-McCuin said. “Be better tomorrow than we were the day before. That is the focus, and you will hear that a lot as a staple to get better.”
In 2015-16, McPhee-McCuin and the Dolphins made history, capturing the program’s first ASUN Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth with an upset in the conference championship game over two-time defending champion Florida Gulf Coast. The victory snapped FGCU’s seven-year, 71-game home streak against ASUN opponents and boosted Jacksonville to a 22-11 record.
McPhee-McCuin replaces Matt Insell who led the Rebels for five seasons. Insell finished his tenure at Ole Miss with a 70-87 overall record, including an 18-62 mark in SEC play and a 2-5 record in the conference tournament. In his five seasons, he took the Rebels to the WNIT twice in 2015 and 2017, his two seasons above the .500 mark as head coach (19-14 in 2015, 17-14 in 2017).
