No. 3 Ole Miss Prepares for an SEC Showdown with MSU
No. 3 Ole Miss stays on the road this weekend as they travel down to Starkville for an SEC showdown with Mississippi State. Due to inclement weather, the series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
Ole Miss (26-4, 6-3 SEC) is coming off of a 12-0 victory over Memphis at AutoZone Park on Wednesday night.
The Rebels remain the winningest team in college baseball, tied with Florida and Duke (26-5) for the most victories in the nation. Ole Miss has the SEC’s best win percentage (.867), good for second in the country behind Stanford (.880).
Ole Miss has tallied 77 two-out RBIs this season. The Rebels totaled 95 all of last year and had just 47 through 30 games.
Mississippi State (15-15, 2-7 SEC) blanked Southern 5-0 on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs salvaged a game from LSU over the weekend.
Junior outfielder Jake Mangum has led MSU offensively as the only Bulldog hitting over .300. Mangum is slashing .328/.438/.411 coming into the weekend with 10 doubles and two triples. He’s also a perfect nine for nine stealing bases and has scored a team-best 20 runs.
The Bulldogs have lacked power in their bats this season. Freshman Josh Hatcher and junior Luke Alexander are tied for the team lead with three home runs apiece. MSU is last in the SEC with 15 homers on the year.
Coach Mike Bianco is making a slight change to his pitching rotation this weekend RHP Brady Feigl will take the hill in Game 1, followed by LHP Ryan Rolison (Game 2) and on Sunday RHP James McArthur will get the nod for the Rebels. The Bulldogs will match up with LHP Konnor Pilkington (Game 1), LHP Ethan Small (Game 2) and RHP Jacob Billing on Sunday.
Mississippi State swept the Rebels last season in Oxford and have a 244-212 lead in the all-time series. Ole Miss has won three of the last five SEC series against State with the Bulldogs taking the last two.
Game times are set for a doubleheader to open the series on Saturday with the first pitch at noon. The second game will follow 45 minutes after the last out of Game 1. On Sunday, the game will start at 1 p.m.
