Treehouse Gallery to Feature Artwork of Melanie Munns in April
The gorgeously surreal works of Oxford artist Melanie Munns will be on display during April at the Oxford Treehouse Gallery and Event Venue.
A reception for the exhibit will be held from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, April 7.
The collection, titled “Pink Fiction,” will be featured in The Roost gallery, and individual works can be purchased. The exhibit will remain up until the first week of May.
“Pink Fiction” confronts the unattainable and unrealistic restraints that women of the past and present feel. Munns uses mid-century motifs and soft colors to address gendered expectations. Cats appear often in her work, sometimes as a symbol of spinsterhood and, in this case, as empowered, ethereal creatures that transcend time and space.
“I primarily use myself and childhood photos as reference material to paint surreal portraiture that capture my feelings of conflict and nostalgia,” Munns said of the collection. “Although there are beauty, sweetness and sugary colors throughout my work, there is also a tone of quietness or dreariness that can be perceived as sadness, strength, or aggression.”
Oxford Treehouse Gallery hours are 12-6 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, and by appointment.
