Rebels' Season Ends in a 85-84 Loss to South Carolina at the SEC Tourney
The Ole Miss Rebels basketball teams 2018 season came to a heartbreaking 85-84 close to South Carolina Wednesday night in the SEC Tournament.
Ole Miss (12-20, 5-13) played loose in the game and was within an 84-81 striking distance of possibly sending the game into overtime. The Rebels fouled Frank Booker with 13.4 seconds remaining to send him to the free-throw line. Booker drained one of two to give the Gamecocks a four-point advantage. As the horn sounded to end the game, Bruce Stevens drained a three-pointer from the corner.
The Rebels fell behind early to South Carolina in the first-half of the game, but in the closing minutes, Ole Miss charged back to make it a 38-36 game at halftime behind the play of Breein Tyree. Tyree finished the game with 18 points.
In the second half, Ole Miss got out to a five-point lead. At the midway point, the Gamecocks used a late 16-4 run to take control of the game.
Three Ole Miss players scored in double-figures, including Terence Davis with 16 points, Stevens with 15 and Deandre Burnett with 13.
Ole Miss’ loss to South Carolina is the 11th in their last 12 games to close out the season.
“Your coach leaves with basically four regular-season games left, and it’s one of those deals that we had to try and rally around each other, stay positive, stay together, and they did a good job of that,” Ole Miss interim coach Tony Madlock said. “I’m just so proud of those guys.”
The Gamecocks were led in the game by Chris Silva with 21 points and 11 rebounds to advance and take on Arkansas at 8:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.
