Thacker Mountain Radio Hits the Road to Delta State Saturday
Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, the award winning, Oxford-based radio program, takes its show to Delta State University, this Saturday, March 3, at 3 p.m.
The show will be held in Studio A in the Whitfield Building on the DSU campus in Cleveland. The program is in support of the Duff Dorrough Scholarship Fund at Delta State’s Delta Music Institute (DMI). Admission is free.
Guests will include musician/producer/author Norbert Putnam, songwriter Tom Kimmel, vocalist (and DMI director) Tricia Walker and DMI student band, Delta Rox. The show is hosted by Jim Dees and the Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers, featuring former Dire Straits guitarist, Jack Sonni.
Saturday’s show will not be broadcast live but will air this spring on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
This year will mark the 10th year Thacker Mountain Radio has visited Delta State. Dorrough, originally from Ruleville, was a Delta State alum and former bandleader for Thacker Mountain Radio.
“It’s always a pleasure to go down to Delta State,” Dees said. “The campus is just 10 miles from Duff’s house, and we get to remember him and see Tricia and hear some tunes. We’re grateful for the opportunity.”
This year’s featured author could easily take up the full hour telling stories from his incredible music career. Norbert Putnam, the legendary record producer and musician, will be reading from his book, “Music Lessons Vol. 1: A Musical Memoir (Thimbleton House).”
Putnam grew up near Florence, Alabama and was part of the group of Muscle Shoals musicians brought to Nashville in 1965 to play for Elvis Presley. As a producer, Putnam was responsible for much of Nashville’s non-country music output from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. His credits include Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Dan Fogelberg, John Hiatt, the Flying Burrito Brothers and the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
Tom Kimmel is singer, songwriter, entertainer, poet and teacher. He has released seven solo albums including “Never Saw Blue,” “Point Clear” and “Honor Among Thieves” well as book of poems, “The Sweetest and the Meanest.”
Guitarist Jack Sonni will be guest-fronting the Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers. Sonni’s career includes a stint with Dire Straits in the mid-1980s during the “Brothers in Arms” album and tour when he played over 250 shows with the band.
Tricia Walker’s long career includes a spot backing Grand Ole Opry star Connie Smith and extensive touring with Shania Twain and Paul Overstreet. Walker is a recording artist whose
forthcoming CD is “Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter Eye.” She currently serves as director of the DMI at Delta State.
Delta Rox is a classic rock student band from Delta State’s DMI.
