Ole Miss Faces No. 6 Seed Missouri in Second Conference Tournament Round
The Ole Miss women’s basketball team hopes to expand on the first round 48-43 victory over No. 11 seed Florida on Wednesday night. Now, they look for another victory against the No. 6 seed Missouri Tigers. Tipoff is set at Bridgestone Arena tonight and will be showed on SEC Network for 25 minutes after Game Three between Tennessee and Auburn at 6 p.m.
Ole Miss went to the wire with the Gators in the opening round of the SEC Tournament in a defensive slugfest. Both squads combined for a 27.8 percent clip from the field and a 25.4 percent mark from three, with both teams shooting under 30 percent in at least two quarters.
The Rebels opened the game up in the second quarter by scoring 17 points. Ole Miss went on a 15-3 run to close out the half to take a 26-19 lead into the break.
Missouri comes into the SEC Tournament as the No. 6 seed with a 23-6 overall record. Postseason play has not been too kind to the Tigers the past five seasons as they are winless in the conference tournament.
The Tigers’ All-SEC performer Jordan Frericks has scored in double figures 12 times in the past 13 games and tallied at least 12 points in seven consecutive games, averaging 15.9 points per contest during the Tigers’ last seven contests. She is coming off a strong showing against Vanderbilt, being only one assist shy of a triple-double with 16-points, 12-rebounds and nine assists.
Missouri traveled to Oxford earlier this season, winning 67-48. The Tigers jumped out to a 20-2 start, but the Rebels nearly drew even the remainder of the game behind a double-double performance from Promise Taylor (16 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks). Mizzou, meanwhile, received 20 points and 10 boards from All-SEC player Sophie Cunningham.
The winner will advance on to Friday and take on No. 3 Georgia at 8:30 p.m.
