W. Stephen Lewis (Steve), 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, in Oxford, on Saturday, February 17.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 24, at 1 p.m., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (113 South 9th Street, Oxford) with Rev. Jody Burnett officiating. Visitation will be immediately preceding the service at the church, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial to follow at Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Steve was born on August 7, 1941, in Moultrie, Ga., to the late Jonathan W. Lewis and Collie Vinson Lewis. He was a graduate of Valdosta State University, Valdosta, Ga. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966, spending two and a half years in Germany. Steve began his career as law enforcement officer with the Thomasville, Ga, Police Department. Steve was a Special Investigator for almost 25 years with the U.S. Treasury Department, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), stationed in Oxford.
Steve was fortunate to retire early and had many years to enjoy doing all the things he loved, many of which involved being outdoors. – riding his bike, kayaking, running, riding horses, and playing his guitar. He enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. and abroad, with his wife, Patricia (whom he affectionately called “PJ”). His love of family was shown every day. To Steve, the four most important things in life were love, family and friends, music, and humor. Those who knew him well, know this to be true. He lived his life to the fullest.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Patricia Rogers Lewis of Oxford; sons, Bishop Lewis (Nicole and granddaughter Margaret – “Maggie Mae” to Steve) and Mason Lewis of Oxford; stepdaughters, Rachel Rogers Namorato (Mike) and Jennifer Rogers Brown (Larry) both of Oxford; sister, Nan Coan (Laurice) of Villa Rica, Ga.; brother, Vinson Lewis (Lisa) of Thomasville, Ga.; and many special nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Bailey and Billi Fae Bius.
