The preseason accolades continue to come in for Ole Miss sophomore lefty Ryan Rolison who was named to the 2018 Golden Spikes Award Watch List.
Rolison is the first diamond Rebel to be named to the list since 2015 with Christian Trent. Rolison is one of 55 players on the watch list and one of 15 from the Southeastern Conference. Of those, only nine are pitchers.
The southpaw is coming off of a Freshman All-America season in which he landed in the weekend rotation for the final eight weekends of the season. He ended the year with a 3.06 ERA and struck out 64 batters in 61.2 innings of work and a 6-3 record.
Rolison has already been named a Preseason All-American by four outlets – Baseball America, Perfect Game, D1Baseball and College Sports Madness. Rolison enters his sophomore campaign as one of the most highly-touted players in all of college baseball. He checks in as high as No. 2 in D1Baseball’s Top 100 Draft prospects and is scattered high among other draft projections.
Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation. It is presented each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
Approximately halfway through the 2018 season, USA Baseball officials and the Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will release the 40-player midseason watch list. A few weeks later, USA Baseball officials will trim the number of players and release the 25 semifinalists. The list of semifinalists will then be sent to a voting body of more than 200 total voters, including past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and former Golden Spikes Award winners. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. In June, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.
The diamond Rebels open the 2018 season on Friday at 4 p.m. with a three-game series against Winthrop.
