Scholarship Money Available for Oxford High Students

Published

Every year the cost of going to college goes up, and that’s why the Oxford High School Parent Teacher Organization hopes to help a little bit.
Right now, OHS students are eligible to apply for three different PTO scholarships.  The oldest was established for students who plan to major in education and attend a school in Mississippi.
“This is our way of contributing to the education of the children of our state,” said Claire Rychlak, former PTO president. “We help someone leaving the Oxford school district get a college education in Mississippi, and hopefully this person will stay to educate K-12 students in Mississippi.”
Though the scholarship has been around for years, it was recently re-named for Mistie Robinson, a much-loved 6th grade teacher who died in 2016 after a lengthy illness.
“She was a great teacher in our district,” Rychlak said. “She was an inspiration in the classroom, in the community and in her personal life. We lost her too soon.”
A second scholarship rewards a student with outstanding character, drive and determination. The Good Citizenship scholarship was recently named for Dr. Kim Stasny, a former superintendent. This student must be nominated by a teacher or administrator from OHS.
“This scholarship stresses character and ‘Respecting the O’,” said PTO member Camie Bianco.
The Henderson family of Oxford has also established a scholarship in honor of Bill and Jane Henderson. This scholarship is awarded to a female student who intends to study in the field of science.
Application materials for the awards are posted on the OHS PTO Facebook page and are due April 17. “These scholarships allow the PTO to support our students with their future goals,” Bianco said.
