Jayla Price, sophomore at Oxford High School, was named Youth of the Year at the Oxford Boys and Girls Club Friday.
Price was up against four other students from the surrounding North Mississippi Boys and Girls Clubs. The award is usually given to a senior; however, with Price’s accomplishments, she was able to lock in the accolade.
“It feels good because there were people older than me,” Price said. “But I believed in myself, and as long as I believe in myself, I know I can do it.”
After accepting the acknowledgment, Price encouraged younger members of the club by giving them advice and told them, “this could be [you] one day.”
“Find somebody you can trust,” Price said. “I trust all these people. I know most of these people, personally.”
The club helps the members learn to trust others, whether a family member, friend or mentor, Price said.
“I want them to be able to go into school and be determined to get good grades,” she said.
Price has been a part of the club for the past four years and currently serves as the president of The Exchange Excel Boys and Girls Club.
“I got tired of sitting around the house,” Price said. “So I asked my mom to sign me and my sister up one summer.”
She believes that since being a part of the club, it has helped her grow as a person.
“[The club] has helped me grow as a better person and grow in my leadership and communication skills.”
