Former Ole Miss defensive star C.J. Johnson is returning home to Scooba, Mississippi, to be the defensive line coach at East Mississippi Community College, a.k.a., Last Chance U, where his coaching career began two seasons ago.
Johnson got the call from EMCC after being at Pearl River Community College for just a few days.
Last season, Johnson was a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic University under the direction of Lane Kiffin.
Prior to jumping into the coaching ranks, Johnson joined the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent, but he was released before the start of training camp.
In college, Johnson battled injuries in four seasons as a player at Ole Miss but was always an emotional leader on the once-vaunted Rebel defense.
EMCC earned national fame on the Netflix series “Last Chance U.” The school has become a junior college powerhouse, sending players like Ole Miss quarterbacks Chad Kelly and Bo Wallace up to the Division 1 ranks. The Lions won the NJCAA title in December with a 31-28 win over Arizona Western.
Johnson will join fellow ex-Rebel Wallace, who is now an assistant coach at EMCC.
