UM Mini-Conference: How Communities Can Recover from Disasters
The University of Mississippi will host the Disaster Resilience Mini-Conference from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, January 19, 2018.
In-person and online participation options are available to all who are interested, but the deadline for online registration is Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Questions about the mini conference should be directed to Ahmed Al-Ostaz (alostaz@olemiss.edu).
The Disaster Resilience Flagship Constellation is organizing the event to share information within the UM community on initiatives related to disaster resilience. The format will be a general information session led by the interim constellation leadership team, a series of five-minute presentations from individual faculty/researchers, and breakout discussions focusing on constellation sub-themes.
According to the National Academies Press, no one is immune from disasters and related losses. “Infectious disease outbreaks, acts of terrorism, social unrest or financial disasters, in addition to natural hazards, can all lead to large-scale consequences for the nation and its communities,” the organization said. “One way to reduce the impacts of disasters … is to invest in enhancing resilience … the ability to prepare and plan for, absorb, recover from, and more successfully adapt to adverse events. Enhanced resilience allows better anticipation of disasters and better planning to reduce disaster losses, rather than waiting for an event to occur and paying for it afterward.
