OPD to Offer Free Children's Firearm Safety Course Jan. 3
The Oxford Police Department is offering its first free firearm safety course for children ages 8-12 on Wednesday, Jan. 3.
“Our initial thought with this project was to reach the kids that might have gotten a firearm for the first time for Christmas,” said Valerie Booth, certified firearm instructor with the Oxford Police Department.
The course, which is also sponsored by Hunters’ Hollow and the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Association, will begin with an educational lecture at 10 a.m. in the OPD Training Building at 715 Molly Barr Road.
“Then, they’ll actually get some live fire training at the range,” Boothe said.
Live fire training will be offered at the F.D. “Buddy” East Range, located off Highway 6 West at 60 County Road 3087. The course will last until 1 p.m., and parents or guardians must be present.
Children are encouraged to bring their BB guns, pellet guns or hunting rifles and their own ammunition. Hunters’ Hollow will also provide .22 caliber rifles.
Space is limited, so contact Valerie Boothe at vboothe@oxfordpolice.net or call 662-232-2400 to register or for more information.
Registration will close Thursday, Dec. 28.
