Thursday's Top Tune Throwback: "Mary, Did You Know?"
Now a modern Christmas classic, “Mary, Did You Know?” was originally recorded in 1991. Written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene, it makes some profound statements through its lyrics. One of my personal favorites:
“The child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you.”
The a cappella group Pentatonix (PTX), formed in 2011, released a fabulous rendition of the classic, and that’s the version we’re highlighting in this week’s throwback. PTX’s 2014 album, “That’s Christmas to Me,” sold more than 6 million discs and became the highest-charting Christmas album since 1962. One of their members, Kristin Maldonado, launched her solo career in May of this year.
Another popular version of “Mary, Did You Know?” was recorded in 1996 as a duet by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd. Whatever version you listen to will, the song will certainly intensify your thoughts regarding what actually occurred in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. No Christmas classic has ever described it better:
“And when you kiss your little baby
You have kissed the face of God.”
