Ole Miss returns to action this evening, looking to rebound from their last three outings as they play host to Sam Houston State in the Pavilion at Ole Miss. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
Ole Miss (4-4) comes in after a 77-58 loss at Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Senior Marcanvis Hymon posted 12 points in the game while his teammate Bruce Stevens posted a career-high 10 points against the Blue Raiders.
Coach Andy Kennedy has used six different starting lineups throughout the first eight games of the season.
The Rebels are led in scoring this season by junior Terence Davis, who’s averaging 16.9 points per game, with Deandre Burnett right behind him with 14.9 per contest.
Sam Houston State enters tonight’s matchup with a 5-4 record following a week off. The Bearkats last played Dec. 4, falling on the road to No. 16 Baylor 84-56. The setback snapped SHSU’s three-game winning streak that followed a three-game losing skid.
As a team, the Bearkats lead the Southland Conference in several categories, including assists per game (17.2), field goal percentage defense (37.7), rebound margin (+6.8), and scoring defense (61.3). Allowing only 61.3 points per game, Sam Houston State ranks 14th nationally in that category and also finds itself 19th in field goal percentage defense.
Offensively, the Bearkats are only averaging 68.1 ppg, and Chris Galbreath Jr. is the lone player to average double figures (14.8 ppg). The senior forward also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 8.0 boards per game. Jason Hooten is in his eighth season as head coach and spent six years as an assistant at the school prior to his promotion.
The last time the Rebels and Bearkats met, Ole Miss went on to finish the season in the Sweet 16. Behind 23 points from Rahim Lockhart, the Rebels outscored Sam Houston State by three in each half to hold on for a 71-65 victory on Nov. 22, 2000. Lockhart shot 9 of 15 from the floor and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to lead Ole Miss to a win in its second game of the season that year. Jason Harrison contributed 13 points and dished out a game-high five assists, while Justin Reed added nine points and six rebounds. The victory was part of an 11-game winning streak to start the 2000-01 campaign, leading to a 27-8 season that ended with the Rebels advancing to the Sweet 16.
