The Ole Miss volleyball team opens postseason play tonight as they host the first two rounds of the National Invitational Volleyball Championships. They take the court against Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m.
The Rebels finds themselves back in the postseason for the first time in seven years. They ended the regular season with a victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks and swept the season series.
Prior to the South Carolina game, the Rebels honored seniors Kate Gibson and Lexi Thompson for their record-setting careers, and the duo then led a 3-1 defeat of the Gamecocks (25-11, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19). Gibson posted her SEC-leading 20th double-double with 16 kills and 20 digs while also adding three service aces. Thompson chipped in eight kills and 13 digs, a service ace and three blocks. The seniors had plenty of help as well, with sophomore Emily Stroup tallying her 11th double-double of the season with a career-high 23 kills on a .319 clip and 13 digs.
Stephen F. Austin (27-6) won the Southland Conference regular season, but the Ladyjacks were upset in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament. They are led by middle blocker Mackenzee Hanna, who is hitting .350 and averaging 1.00 blocks per set.
The Rebels own a 2-1 series lead against Stephen F. Austin. In their last meeting, the Rebels defeated the Ladyjacks 3-0 in 2013 at the TCU/Nike Molten Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. A win tonight would be Ole Miss’ first postseason victory in school history and propel them to a match on Thursday against the winner of Arkansas State and SIUE.
