Thacker Mountain Radio Hour to Host Holiday/Membership Party
The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour is hosting its annual holiday/membership party complete with a unique silent auction this Friday, Dec. 1 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Southside Gallery (150 Van Buren Ave.)
The event will feature live music by the show’s house band, The Yalobushwhackers, as well as food and drink by local caterers, Party Waitin’ To Happen.
The party is free to current members. New members may join at the door for $50 for singles, $75 for couples and $20 for students. Memberships are good for one year.
The bidding on auction items will remain open until 8:30 p.m., giving guests ample time to browse the large and “Oxford-centric” collection of items available. This year’s list includes a favorite from last year, the ‘Around the Square’ Progressive Dinner. This is a dinner for six with each course provided at the home of a different Oxonian including food journalist John T. Edge and Chef John Currence with transportation provided by Flying Tuk.
Other food-related auction items include an Oxford, Water Valley and Taylor “staycation” that includes art and brewery tours plus dinner at Saint Leo’s in Oxford.
Artwork is available from area artists and those with ties to the region including Dick Waterman, Glennray Tutor, Ed Croom, John Cofield, Deborah Freeland, Yerger Andre, Tom Rankin and Hannah McCormick, among others.
Other items up for bid include: an evening of stories and drinks at Rowan Oak (home of William Faulkner), Double Decker VIP passes, a chef’s tasting of seasonal courses from Tarasque Cucina, a guided Pickwick Lake fishing trip, hot tamale cooking lessons, a tour of Clarksdale blues sites with blues promoter Roger Stolle, and tickets to the third annual Hill Country Boucherie at Home Place Pastures in Como featuring award-winning chefs and blues music.
The membership party, now in its fifth year, has traditionally drawn a large crowd to Southside Gallery. The evening helps to underwrite the show’s production expenses as well as serve as the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season in Oxford.
The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, now in its 20th year, is broadcast live every week in spring and fall on WUMS (92.1 FM) from Off Square Books. It can be heard every Saturday at 7 p.m. on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (90.3 FM in Oxford) and online.
Live performances will resume at Off Square Books on Feb. 1, 2018.
