Rebels to Host South Dakota State in the Pavilion Tonight
The Ole Miss Rebels return to action tonight as they take the court against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the confines of the Pavilion.
Ole Miss (4-1) comes in after a 79-62 victory over Rice in Las Vegas. The Rebels went 3-1 in MGM Resorts Main Event games with the only loss coming to Utah. Senior forward Justas Furmanavicius scored 16 of his season total of 20 points in Vegas.
“We did not play as well against Utah,” Ole Miss Head Coach Andy Kennedy said. “They come from a good league and played better than us. We did not play as well as I had hoped.”
On the bright side, Coach Kennedy’s squad has made the second-fewest turnovers in the SEC (63).
Deandre Burnett leads Ole Miss and ranks 10th in the conference in three-point percentage (.462).
“Burnett has been our most consistent player from a production standpoint,” Kennedy said.
South Dakota State enters tonight’s game with a 6-2 record on the 2017-18 campaign. Losses to Kansas and Wyoming are sandwiched between a pair of three-game winning streaks. The Jackrabbits won three of their four games last week, winning two in the Cayman Islands Classic before cruising past Dakota State 92-60 at home on Sunday.
“South Dakota State is a really good team,” Kennedy said. “They are a team that has gone to back-to-back NCAA tournaments.“
Junior forward Mike Daum, the 2016-17 Summit League Player of the Year, paces the Jackrabbits in scoring at 19.4 ppg. Off the bench, freshman David Jenkins has been a spark plug and sharpshooter, averaging 14.5 ppg and shooting 48.9 percent (23 of 47) from beyond the arc.
As a team, South Dakota State is shooting an impressive 41.1 percent from long distance. T.J. Otzelberger is in his second season as head coach after leading the Jackrabbits to the NCAA Tournament last season as winners of the Summit League Championship.
In the Rebels’ only previous matchup with South Dakota State, Ole Miss all-time leading scorer John Stroud (a freshman at the time) scored 13 points to help lead the Rebels to an eight-point victory.
