The Ole Miss Rebels men’s basketball team takes to the court Monday night against Utah in the MGM Grand Main Event out in Las Vegas. Tipoff is set for 11:30 p.m. at the T-Mobile Arena.
Ole Miss (3-0) comes into the game after defeating Georgia State 77-72 Friday night, and last Monday they took care of Eastern Kentucky 85-75. The Rebels have used a second-half rally twice this season to remain undefeated.
Coach Andy Kennedy’s guards this season have accounted for 76.2 percent of the scoring through the first three games. Junior guard Terence Davis is averaging 20.3 points per game, which ranks fourth in the SEC.
Despite losing four starters from last year’s team that made the NIT, Utah enters the MGM Grand Main Event with an undefeated 3-0 mark following victories over Prairie View A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Missouri to start the season.
During the three home victories, Utah outscored opponents by an average of 26.3 points. Five Utes average double figures in scoring, led by David Collette’s 14.0 points per game.
Utah leads the Pac-12 in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding the opposition to shooting 21.2 percent from beyond the arc. Larry Krystkowiak is in his seventh season in guiding the Utes.
Ole Miss is going to be facing a team that it has only played once prior to this season’s matchup. The Rebels previously faced the Utes in a regular season tournament on Nov. 21, 2008. The Rebels’ Chris Warren scored 22 points near his hometown of Orlando, but it was not enough to overcome a powerful Utah team, as Ole Miss suffered its first loss of the season 83-72 in the opening round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic (Daytona Beach, Florida). The Rebels also got 18 points from David Huertas.
On Wednesday, the Rebels will either match up against Rice or UNLV.
