Exchange Club Launches First Excel Club with Oxford Boys and Girls Club
The Oxford Exchange Club partnered with the Oxford Boys and Girls Club to launch its first Excel Club on Wednesday.
The Exchange Club was longing to do more with the local children, and Margaret King, president of the Exchange Club, told Kanaris Wilson, the Boys and Girls Club director, what she had in mind to help.
“He said to me without hesitation, ‘Yes, let’s do it,’” King said. “It has been several months in the making. It takes time to get everything laid out and to get it to work, and I think we have a great group of students to help us and some really good members. We want to pay it forward to them [so they can] pay it back to someone else.”
Excel Clubs are groups of high school students dedicated to improving their schools, communities and country through volunteerism. Excel Clubs focus on Exchange’s four programs of service: Americanism, youth activities, community service and the prevention of child abuse.
“It is just a really proud moment for me to stand here in front of the first Boys and Girls Club Exchange Excel in the nation,” King said. “There is a Junior Excel, but this is the only Excel Club in the nation of the Boys and Girls Club. We hope that it will be the first of many.”
“These kids will be working in their community,” said Denise Strub, volunteer field representative for the National Exchange Club. “We are big about doing community service. We even offer scholarships.”
