On a very chilly Saturday inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Ole Miss suffered a heartbreaking 38-37 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Rebels never trailed in the game until Arkansas kicked a go-ahead field goal with just seconds left on the fourth-quarter clock. But they failed to contain the Razorbacks’ ground game and were plagued by turnovers that led to scores and fueled Arkansas’ second-half comeback.
Ole Miss (3-5, 1-4) got the first touchdown on the board by a 64-yard run by running back Jordan Wilkins.
The Razorbacks answered quickly with a scoring drive of their own, capped off by a 12-yard pass from quarterback Cole Kelly to Devwah Whaley.
The Rebel offense then started to heat things up for Arkansas as they reeled off 24 unanswered points. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu found pay twice on the ground with a 49-yard scamper and an eight-yard dash.
Running back Eric Sweeney got in the scoring action with a two-yard run into the end zone.
But Arkansas cut into the Rebel lead late in the second quarter off two Ole Miss turnovers, including a fumble by Octavious Cooley and an interception on Ta’amu, that resulted in 14 points.
Ole Miss would then take a 31-21 lead at halftime.
The Landshark defense held Arkansas to only a touchdown in the third quarter. But the Rebels would struggle to reach the end zone in the second half, settling on two field goals off of the foot of Gary Wunderlich in the fourth quarter of the game.
Arkansas scored a touchdown off of a 22-yard fumble return, making the score Ole Miss 37-35.
With just seven seconds on the clock, the Razorbacks would finally kick a game-winning field goal drive to secure the win from 34 yards out.
Ole Miss ended the game with 566 yards of total offense as Ta’amu had 368 yards in the air with one interception. He rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
The Rebels head to the Bluegrass State next weekend to take on the Kentucky Wildcats.
