Charley Ann Nix Wins 2017 Miss University Title
After appearing as last year’s first alternate, Charley Ann Nix of Batesville was crowned the 2017 Miss University for the University of Mississippi Sunday night at The Gertrude C. Ford Center.
Nix stunned the audience, looking glamorous in her white, fully beaded evening gown. She showcased her hard work in the Lifestyle and Fitness Swimsuit Competition followed by her musical talent on the piano, performing Piano Fantasy.
Nix not only won the overall title, but was also announced as the winner of the Interview Session held earlier in the day. She will spend the next year promoting her platform, Don’t Wait, Educate: A Bullying Prevention Program.
She received over $5,000 in scholarships and prizes and will represent the University of Mississippi in the Miss Mississippi Pageant this June in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Nix is a Biochemistry Major looking to pursue a career in the medical field. She has received many scholastic honors and achievements such as Luckyday Success Program Scholar, Provost Scholar, Academic Excellence Scholarship recipient and much more. She has also proudly served as a Community Assistant for the Student Housing Department at Ole Miss for many years, helping young women in their transition to college.
Blair Wortsmith of Little Rock, Arkansas, received first alternate and Emma Gaddy of Moulton, Alabama, received the second alternate. The 14 girls competing were scored on their performance in the following categories: Evening Gown, Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit, Talent, and On-Stage Interview.
The beautiful evening was hosted by former Miss University, Leah Gibson, and reigning Miss Mississippi, Anne Elizabeth Buys. In addition to the competition, Sam Mooney showcased his musical talents, followed by dance numbers from Hinge Dance Company. Gibson returned to the stage to perform her vocal talents one last time as Miss University.
After two years of hard work and dedication, Charley Ann Nix expressed her gratitude and excitement when being crowned the 2017 Miss University of the University of Mississippi.
