The Lafayette Commodores return home this evening to host the Center Hill Mustangs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Lafayette (2-6, 2-2) looks to bounce back after last week’s 14-12 heartbreaker to Grenada. The Commodores had a chance to tie the game late but could not convert.
“It was really a tough game … we had a chance to tie it up and just fell short, we could not execute down the stretch,” Lafayette’s head coach Michael Fair said. “Our kids are getting better. I thought we played extremely hard. Execution wasn’t where we wanted it to be.”
In the remainder of the season, Lafayette has a lot of bright spots coming out of that game, even in a loss.
“We have a lot to work on moving forward,” Fair said.
The Commodores are sitting at .500 in district play after the loss to Grenada last Friday.
“We still think we have a chance to get into the playoffs … we are going to have to play our way in,” Fair said. “We are going to have to win these next few games to get in the playoffs and feel like we have a good chance at doing that.
“Our kids are really motivated and had a really good week of practice, and we are just taking it one game at a time. Center Hill is a good opponent.”
Center Hill (1-7, 1-3) comes into this game after a 40-27 loss to Lewisburg. The Mustangs took a 14-13 lead into the second quarter against the Lewisburg Patriots. The Patriots held Center Hill scoreless until the fourth quarter with a score of 33-14. The Mustangs are 0-4 on the road this season.
“They are really well coached,” Fair said. “They run the triple option, which is something that we don’t see very often. So we are going to have to be very disciplined on defense and tackle well. [Center Hill] is a very good, solid football team. They are about like us. Their record really doesn’t show what type of team they are… They have improved each week as well.”
