The End of All Music, Oxford’s independent record store, recently revealed their pick, or rather picks, for October’s Records of the Month: Kamasi Washington’s “Harmony of Difference“ and Sun Seeker’s “Biddeford.” Each selection is an EP (extended play) rather than a full album.
Kamasi Washington is an experimental jazz artist whose work consists of almost entirely instrumental pieces. His first album, “Epic,” was The End of All Music’s favorite record of 2015.
The album explores the use of “counterpoint,” which Washington describes as, “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies,” hence the new EP’s title.
“My hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realize the beauty in our own differences,” Washington said.
Sun Seeker is an indie rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. They have played in Oxford at both Proud Larry’s and The End of All Music. Although the band has been around since 2013, “Biddeford“ is their first official EP.
According to The End of All Music’s website, “’Biddeford’… is near combustion level with beautiful atmospherics, willful lyricism and a supernatural ear for atypical pop hooks.”
David Swider, owner of The End of All Music, curates the Record of the Month selections with the hopes that subscribers will be introduced to new artists and sounds that they otherwise would not have heard.
“Both records are completely opposite ends of the spectrum,” Swider said. “I think it’s cool, every once in a while, for the Record of the Month Club folks to get something they’re completely not expecting. A lot of people haven’t heard of either one of these artists. We’re big champions of both of them, and I think they’re both going to go on to do really important stuff.”
Even if you’re not a Record of the Month subscriber, both EPs are available in-store. If you’re interested in becoming a member of The End of All Music’s Record of the Month club, you can sign up here.
