Reflections: Life Is so Precious and Short
Enjoy our “Reflections” post — one of many vignettes and stories featuring memories of days gone by. This installment is from J.W. “Jay” Mitchell of Coldwater, Mississippi, as seen in “The Oxford So & So.”

Jay Mitchell and his wife.
I know several of the writers of the “So & So.” We are old and on our last leg. WE have one regular writer that is over 90 years old. Trust me; we are not ready to die. Most of us think we have done it all but we are not ready to leave this world right now. As Southerners, we are very expressive, and we have sayings that express our feelings.
The songs that we grew up with express our feeling: “Some glad morning when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away,” and “Love Lifted Me.”
I am 75 years young and feel great. Today, while I was washing dishes, I was looking out of my kitchen window at my neighbor’s house across the street. They are in their 80s and both have had hip surgery. They had just driven home from shopping, and I watched them walking up their slanted ramp, built by loving friends. They were carrying their grocery bags and using walkers. It took them several minutes to get into the house, and I felt bad that I didn’t go help them. I was moved to write this:
This couple has been married for 60 years, and they were helping each other get up the ramp. My thought was what would happen if one of them died. I don’t think that one could live without the other. I don’t think that one would want to live without the other. People, what’s happened to our world? Our young people don’t even marry anymore. What are you living for?
My wonderful wife, and I have been married for 53 years; I can not believe how fast that went by, I want 50 more. I LOVE my wife and could not live without her and would not want to. Life is so short and many of us waste most of it, and some never find it. What are you doing with your life? God gave you life, you don’t have to believe in God, just try to figure out where life came from if you don’t believe in Him or Her. You are so smart, then were did you come from and what is the purpose of LIFE?
Life is so short, why don’t we get the most out of it? Good God, it is fun if you don’t screw it up. I am not saying “go to church,” I’m saying, THINK, THINK. “If you live by the sword, you will die by the sword.” Go love somebody and let them love you, it’s all about LOVE.
This is my philosophy now; I had to learn it the hard way. Thank you God, whoever You are for the years of LOVE and LOVING that I have had.
