Michigan Comes To Town To Take On Rebel Soccer Team
The Ole Miss soccer team returns to the pitch this evening as they host No. 23 Michigan. First kick is set for 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Ole Miss (2-0) enters the weekend after a dominating weekend to open the 2017 campaign. The Rebels blanked both Alabama State and Northwestern State by a score of 8-0 in each match.
Junior CeCe Kizer matched her scoring total from last season with five goals in the first two matches of the season. Kizer had a hat-trick against Alabama State last Friday night. While her teammate freshman Channing Foster picked up a hat-trick against Northwestern State.
Michigan, ranked No. 23 in this week’s United Soccer Coaches’ Poll (USC – formerly NSCAA), heads into Friday night 2-0 after wins over Washington and Idaho State. Led by 10th-year head coach Greg Ryan, the Wolverines pitched two shutouts in opening weekend with a 2-0 victory in the opener, and a 4-0 defeat in game two. A team that last year went 10-5-5 en route to the NCAA Tournament, Michigan was led by Taylor Timko and Sarah Startigakis through two contests. Timko has three goals and one assist on the year, while Startigakis scored a pair. Defensively, the Wolverines played three goalies with Hillary Beall and Megan Hinz earning the starts.
The Rebels and Wolverines have met only once just last season in Ann Arbor. In that contest, Ole Miss outshot Michigan 19-10, but two first half scores sealed the victory for the home team last September.
On Sunday, Ole Miss will host Lamar with the game beginning at 2 p.m.
