Ten Days Away, Rebels Turn Their Focus To Game Prep
We are officially ten days away from the beginning of the 2017 football season, and head coach Matt Luke and his Rebels are preparing to take on South Alabama at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. As Ole Miss began game planning for their first game, Luke spoke to the media yesterday about the team’s performance in their second scrimmage on Saturday.
The scrimmage took place at the stadium, which gave the team a chance to operate under game conditions, with coaches in the box and on the sidelines. Luke said that they will have another “mock game” this weekend to clean things up and get ready for week one. Luke also discussed depth on the offensive and defensive lines and the performance of the secondary.
Luke provided an update on the team’s injuries including starting TE Dawson Knox, OL Jordan Sims, DL Benito Jones, and DL Qaadir Sheppard and others. See videos of Luke, DE/LB Marquis Haynes and TE Jason Pellerin below:
Ole Miss HC Matt Luke
“We started today, we had some South Alabama looks, and we’re starting to prepare for their looks. The closer we get to the game, the more and more we’ll start transitioning into that.”
DE/LB Marquis Haynes
The leader of the Rebel defense, Marquis Haynes spoke about his role as a mentor for some of his younger teammates, how his game has changed in the offseason, and his potential NFL future.
“My role is to be the leader, to show them the right way to take on blocks, be more physical and tell them that deep down ‘you have more, you can give more.'”
TE Jason Pellerin
Jason Pellerin has had numerous roles during his short time with Ole Miss, but he is embracing the latest challenge as he develops as a tight end. Pellerin was able to speak with Evan Engram back in the spring, and gave insight about what they talked about. Pellerin began his Ole Miss career at QB, and while he didn’t expect to be at TE, he’s ready to get on the field.
“The thing I learned at QB, last year what happened with Chad, any given play or moment it could be your time to step up so you have to prepare the right way.
