“I am excited about adding Garner to our program,” said Insell. “Garner has great experience in the game of basketball both as a player and as a coach and I feel he will be a major part of our growth as we move forward. Our backgrounds are very similar and I am thrilled about him joining the Ole Miss women’s basketball program”
Small comes to Oxford after serving as an assistant coach at Clarendon College in Texas for the 2016-17 season. Prior to that Small spent time as a graduate assistant and video coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Martin and also at his alma mater, Olivet College.
A coach’s kid, like Insell, Small was a four-sport high school athlete coached in basketball by his father at Schoolcraft High School in Schoolcraft, Michigan. Small spent two years at Kalamazoo Valley Community College where he was named to the MCCAA third team and earned academic all-conference honors. He spent one year at Goshen College before closing his collegiate career at Olivet College where he averaged 15.7 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game.
