Ever since Rib Cage closed their doors, people on the Oxford Square have been searching for a place to get their barbecue fix, and Moe’s Original BBQ is about to fill the void.
In 1988 three Alabama graduates learned to smoke meats from a man by the name of Moses Day in Tuscaloosa. After leaving Alabama for the mountains of Colorado, they began selling barbeque out of a doublewide on a local river, and the original Moe’s Barbeque was founded. Since then, over 50 locations have been opened with just one other Mississippi location.
Longtime Oxford resident John Allgood has wanted to open a restaurant in Oxford for 20 years, and when the space became available, he jumped at the chance to realize his dream.
“I have wanted to open a barbeque restaurant in Oxford for over 20 years now, and when I realized that this void needed to be filled, I knew that this was the right time,” Allgood said.
Allgood is joined by his partners, Michael Roos and Maggie Meyer, who both moved to Oxford after operating a location in Colorado.
“We came from Denver, and John showed us around Oxford and after meeting people around town and getting to know the city, all we could say was ‘Yes, let’s do this,’” Roos said.

Moe’s Original BBQ will soon open in the Rib Cage’s previous location on the Oxford Square

When it comes to barbeque, the three partners know just how important it is to provide fresh meats on a day in and day out basis.
“We’re going to smoke all our meats overnight, and it will ready fresh every day at 7 a.m.,” Roos said. “We cook everything fresh so come in and get it because there will be days where demand exceeds our supply. I like to think that’s the sign of a good barbecue restaurant because you know we’re not reusing things from the day before.”
Meyer added, “We won’t need a freezer or a microwave in our kitchen that’s for sure.”

The establishment will offer a wide variety of pork, chicken wings that “will blow people away”, and other meats with Moe’s signature dry rub. Also available will be an Alabama-style white barbeque sauce that the trio of owners is sure will be a hit.
“My mom drinks it with a straw,” Allgood said with a laugh.
At barbeque restaurants, almost as important as the meats themselves are the sides. All of Moe’s sides are made in house, and they will offer all the staples like mac & cheese, potato salad, beans along with 40 rotating daily special sides.
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. throughout the week, but the bar will be open “until the city says we can’t be open anymore” from Thursday – Saturday. The owners are also in the process of developing a late-night menu to satisfy Oxonian’s barbeque cravings throughout the night.
“When you come in, you know that this is the kind of place where you can hang out, get great food and great drinks all day and all night long,” Meyer said.
The rustic interior will be comprised of brick, metal and wood, with wood that has been reclaimed from a century old barn that was purchased by the owners.
“It’s neat to think that this wood has been standing in a field for centuries and we’re reusing and giving it a new purpose,” Allgood said.

The tables and the bar will be built using the reclaimed wood

Allgood has worked in the local restaurant industry for years and knows that whether it’s the food, the atmosphere or the service, Oxford locals know their stuff.
“There’s a lot of good food in Oxford,” Allgood said, “and Oxford knows quality, so you’ve got to bring your A-game, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
Moe’s is projected to open around the first of September.
