On the court, former Ole Miss Rebel basketball star Justin Reed battled his way through opponents helping lead the Rebels to the program’s first-ever “Sweet Sixteen” berth in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Now retired from the game, Reed has another battle to face. At just 35 years old, Reed has begun a battle with spinal cancer. A GoFundMe page has been created to help Reed pay for medical expenses that come with his diagnosis.
The page currently has received just under $18,000 in just four days. The page has a goal of $20,000. Reed is awaiting results from path reports from two hospitals and will meet with doctors to determine what is next. The donations to Reed’s care will aid him in receiving care from a specialist in Houston.
“Justin and his family need our help. He is unable to work, yet has the same expenses while he is not working that he did before such as housing, utilities, food, etc. He also has children to take care of. He will also need help with getting to and from the doctor, to and from treatments. etc. Right now, the decision has not definitely been made, but it looks like he will be going to MD Anderson in Houston for the best care available.”
The Jackson native was a part of the “Provine Posse” from Provine High School to sign with Ole Miss. Reed was All-SEC in each of his four years and won the SEC scoring title in 2003-04 averaging 18.5 points per game. Reed was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2004 NBA Draft and spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Houston Rockets before the end of his NBA career.
An all-time Rebel great is fighting for his life, and just as the Ole Miss community supported him when he donned the red and blue, he needs you now more than ever.
