Rise And Shine For The 12th Annual Stars And Stripes 5K
This year will be the 12th annual Stars and Stripes 5K fundraiser to raise money for the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society. The 5K will take place on the Square tomorrow morning. Beginning with the 5k, the fundraiser will also feature a 1⁄2 mile fun run, food and lots of prizes.
Registration begins at 6:00 a.m at the Courthouse Square. for runners who entered via mail or online before July 1. While the entry fee for the 5K is $30 per person, the fun run is $15 per person. Runners are welcomed to bring their families and their dogs to participate.
“It is one of our favorite fundraisers of the year,” Jenn Petermann, Director of the Oxford-
Lafayette Humane Society, said. “We see several of the same people each year and some new people.”
The 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. on the Oxford Square for a fun flat race through historic downtown. Water stations will provide refreshments for runners in three different locations across town. The scores will be collected by Best Times ChampionChip timing technology with the rental price of a timer included on the ticket.
Both a male and female first, second and third place winner in each age group will be given a prize crafted by Spirt Song Poetry. Every runner will receive an official Stars and Stripes T-shirt for entering.
The 1⁄2 mile fun run starts at 8:30 a.m. after the 5K. After a lengthy run, contestants and attendees have pizza at the awards ceremony to look forward to.
All the proceeds from the race will benefit animals at the Humane Society. There, many dogs, cats and even a pig wait to be adopted by new owners.
“I think it is a great way for the community to get involved with the animals,” Madi Arnold, 15, a volunteer worker with the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, said.
“OLHS takes in 5000+ animals each year, and Stars & Stripes is our second largest fundraiser,” Gail Brown, coordinator of the Stars and Strips 5K, said. “These events are pertinent to raise the funds to help with shelter operations to provide the care for every animal that is brought through the doors. Without these much-needed funds, the shelter would not be able to sufficiently care and provide the necessities for all the homeless animals we receive!”
Readers can check out the animals at the humane society’s website, For more information about the humane society, you can visit their website, Oxfordpets.com. The website can provide information on ways to become active with the animals and donate to the Society.
