The honors keep piling up for Ole Miss golfer Braden Thornberry. The NCAA Division I individual national champion was named to the 2017 All-Nicklaus Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Thursday afternoon.
Thornberry was one of 24 golfers throughout Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA that were recognized for their outstanding play during the 2016-17 collegiate season. The All-Nicklaus Team was created in 2008, and is not only named for history’s greatest player but also a long-time supporter of collegiate and amateur golf, Jack Nicklaus.
As a sophomore, Thornberry posted five wins throughout the season and became the first Rebel in program history to win the NCAA national title. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native also led the nation in stroke average at 69.57 and was named the winner of the Haskins Award, given to the country’s most outstanding collegiate golfer. With seven career wins in only two seasons, Thornberry is already tied with Dave Peege for the most individual victories in school history.
Joining Thornberry on the All-Nicklaus Team are Chandler Blanchet of West Florida, Odessa’s Adam Blomme, Sam Burns of LSU, Oregon’s Wyndham Clark, John Coultas and John VanDerLaan of Florida Southern, Berry’s Ryan Elmore, Rupert Kaminski of Oklahoma City, Huntingdon’s Addison Lambeth, Logan Lanier of LaGrange, Dalton State’s SM Lee, Rowan Lester of Texas Wesleyan, Marco Maldonado of Tyler JC, Nova Southeastern’s Richard Mansell, Patrick Martin of Vanderbilt, Stanford’s Maverick McNealy, Collin Morikawa of California, UNLV’s John Oda, Indian Hills Rickey Sanders, Jimmy Stanger of Virginia, Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Colin Troxler, and Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris.

Ole Miss Athletics Records Its Highest Directors’ Cup Finish

at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium Saturday during the Ole Miss v Alabama.
The Ole Miss athletics department recorded the highest finish in its history in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, as the final 2016-17 standings were released on Thursday.
The Rebels’ 39th-place finish breaks the previous school record of 45th set in 1998-99. Ole Miss has placed inside the top 50 each of the last two seasons (49th in 2015-16) after only two such finishes previously (1998-99 and 49th in 2006-07).
“We are proud of the hard work by our student-athletes and coaches in reaching this new milestone for our department,” said Ross Bjork, Ole Miss Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics. “We strive for success in all areas, and the Directors’ Cup is an excellent barometer for that. Our ceiling has yet to be defined and we know there is more to be accomplished in all of our sports. We look forward to competing for and winning championships in the years to come.”
The Directors’ Cup measures competitive success for all Division-I schools. For each NCAA-sanctioned sport, schools are awarded points based on NCAA championship participation.
The Rebel men’s cross country team finished fourth to lead 10 programs that scored points toward Ole Miss’ Director’s Cup total. Softball ranked ninth, while women’s indoor track & field and men’s outdoor track round out Rebel squads in the top 15 at 12th and 14th respectively. Below are Ole Miss’ complete finishes by sport:

Men’s cross country – Fourth, 80 points
Softball – Ninth, 64 points
Women’s indoor track and field – 12th, 63.75 points
