Second Annual Conference On The Front Porch Announced
Main Street Taylor, LLC is pleased to announce the dates and lineup for the second annual “Conference on the Front Porch.” The conference will take place October 18-19, 2017 in Taylor, MS at The Mill at Plein Air.
This conference, which had its inaugural meeting in October of 2016, focuses on the architectural as well as sociological importance of the front porch in the American South. In year two, topics such as the porch and food, music, literature, and storytelling will be explored in context with the front porch and all that it represents.
Keynote speaker for the year two will be John T. Edge – founder and Director of The Southern Foodways Symposium – who will read and discuss topics in his bestselling new book, “The Potlikker Papers” – which is a history of food in the south. Food, and the use of food as community builder are important themes in the book and in the history of the front porch.
Other confirmed speakers are: Curtis Wilkie, Bill Dunlap, Scott Baretta, Jay Watson, Garlan Gudger, and Cooter Ramsey.
“Last year we delved deep into the history of the front porch, why it almost disappeared, what brought it back and things like that. It was a serious porch nerds dissection. Our audience loved it. In year two we’ll still have some of that, but we will expand beyond the history of the porch into extensions of life on the porch. Food, music, literature, storytelling. The front porch in the age of Facebook. The front porch is so much more than a thing; it is representative of a way of life ” said Plein Air founder Campbell McCool.
In addition to the two days of panels and lectures, there will be an evening porch play featuring John Maxwell and his fantastic one-man show, “Oh, Mr. Faulkner, Do You Write?” The second night will feature a field dinner followed by a porch concert featuring singer-songwriter Tricia Walker. There will also be guided tours of Rowan Oak, The Blues Museum at Ole Miss, and several private homes in Oxford.
The conference is open to architects, cultural historians, sociologists, developers, and lovers of all things front porch. The cost to attend is $275 which includes attendance of all panels and lectures, six meals, and the play and concert.
Attendance is limited to 200 people.
