Seventy-two Ole Miss student-athletes, including NCAA men’s golf individual champion and Haskins Award winner, Braden Thornberry, and 12 members from the NCAA Super Regional softball team, were named to the 2017 Spring Academic Honor Roll announced by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on Monday.
In total, 1,245 student-athletes from each SEC institution were recognized on the honor roll.
The track and field squads were well-represented with 31 honorees including recently named All-Americans Craig Engels, who took third place at the NCAA Championships in the 1500 meters, and Dempsey McGuigan, who placed 10th in the hammer throw.
The baseball team was represented by nine players with senior Colby Bortles leading the way, while the tennis teams had a combined 11 players honored including Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton who reached the NCAA second round in doubles on the men’s side and Arianne Hartono who reached the second round of the NCAA women’s individual singles competition.
This spring, Ole Miss student athletes achieved the highest cumulative semester GPA in recorded history with a 3.01. More than 50 percent of the student-athletes earned a spot on the AD’s Honor Roll for a 3.00 GPA or better.
In total, 319 of Ole Miss’ 359 student-athletes were named to either the AD, Dean’s or Chancellor’s Honor Roll with 25 student-athletes earning 4.00 GPAs for the spring semester.
The 2017 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track & field. It is based on grades from the 2016 summer, 2016 fall and 2017 spring terms.
