Rebel Softball Coaching Staff Earns Regional Staff Of The Year
Coming off yet another record breaking year and 43-win campaign, Ole Miss softball’s coaching staff has landed a major national honor, as one of 14 programs across the country to earn the NFCA Division I Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award.
Voted on by their respective regions, the 14 coaching staffs are now eligible for the NFCA’s National Coaching Staff of the Year award, which will be announced June 28.
Ole Miss’ staff – led by Head Coach Mike Smith, Associate Head Coach Ruben Felix, Assistant Coach Taryne Mowatt, Volunteer Assistant Katie Rietkovich, and Director of Operations Jody Davidson – earned the honor for the first time in school history. The Rebels were one of two staffs in the South region honored as Texas A&M and Ole Miss tied to both earn the regional accolades.
The Rebels earned the No. 12 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced all the way to Super Regionals, dropping two highly contested one-run games at No. 5 seed UCLA. The Rebels hosted and swept their first NCAA Regional, defeating Southern Illinois, Arizona State and North Carolina, and also claimed the school’s first ever SEC Tournament title.
Despite a national ranking of 13 in the final NFCA poll before postseason play began, Ole Miss fell to No. 16 in the final USA Today/NFCA Top-25 Coaches Poll, which was released Monday.
