John Cofield's Oxford & Ole Miss: Faces Of Oxford, Gene Oxnam

Faces Of Oxford ~ Sitting with Milly West and going through thousands of her wonderful photographs, a big grin spread across my face when she asked if I could ID this Oxonian.
Ah yeah, Mr. Gene Oxnam, and where do I start? Bramlett crossing guard with a much-loved flair for the directionally dramatic. “Strike!”, many a little leaguer heard down through his decades behind the plate. But also, with a wink and nod of encouragement for your at bat.

Gene Oxnam was born a “man in uniform.” Military, police, or Scouting, he filled them all out well. He was the first adult to sit me down and teach me one-on-one. I have the memories of those hours between the two of us as together we achieved my Boy Scouts of America, God and Country Award. I still have it, and now Oxford and I have this fine photograph to remember him by. And the memories are of a man who more than added his cool chapter to our Oxford upbringings.
