Oxford Fire Department's "Kid's Camp" Aims To Educate Children On Fire Safety

The Oxford Fire Department is hosting its seventh annual Kid’s Camp from June 5th-7th at Station One.  The camp is designed to teach kids about basic fire prevention techniques.  The kids attend the camp from 9:00-12:00, and Thursday afternoon, June 7th, they will “graduate” and celebrate their accomplishments with a “Water Day.”

Children learn to “stop, drop, and roll”

The firefighters organize fun and informative activities for the kids, so they effectively learn the importance of fire safety.  The firefighters teach the kids a variety of fire prevention information such as how to “stop, drop, and roll,” dial 9-1-1 and speak to the operator, and understand the function of smoke detectors.  One of the most unique activities will happen on Wednesday, June 6th.
The children learn about the features of and how to use a smoke detector.

The department will bring in an “education trailer”. The trailer fills with smoke and simulates what would happen if the kids’ house caught on fire, so the children learn what to do first-hand and how to escape the house safely.  Firefighters will be on hand to ensure the safety of the children during the drill.
The department hopes that, through this camp, parents and their children will become more aware of fire safety.  According to William Stewart, Fire Public Educator of the Oxford Fire Department, the department sends the kids home with homework each day in hopes that the kids take their newfound knowledge home and share it with their parents.  Through informing children and parents about fire safety, the department hopes to decrease fatalities and disasters due to fires.
