Ella Johnson Joins Ole Miss Soccer From BYU
Ella Johnson, a member of BYU’s Sweet 16 from a year ago, has joined the Rebel soccer program and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning this fall.
The sister of Ole Miss soccer signee Grace Johnson, Ella hails from Centerville, Utah, and spent the last three years as part of BYU’s strong program in Provo. A 5-foot-10 defender, Johnson was an everyday starter as a freshman for the Cougars, and finished her career with three goals.
Johnson took a redshirt season this past fall, and spent her sophomore year playing in 13 games. In that season, she helped lead the Cougars to a 13-win season, and a 7-1-1 record in West Coast Conference action.
In 2013, Johnson started every game at outside back and recorded goals against Oklahoma, LMU and Weber State. She was ranked No. 93 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Midseason Freshman Top 100, and became only the second freshman in BYU history to score a goal in the NCAA Tournament with her penalty kick against Weber State.
“I’m thrilled that Ella will join us to pay alongside her sister,” head coach Matthew Mott said. “She transfers to us from a great BYU team. I have a ton of respect for Coach (Jennifer) Rockwood and the BYU program. Ella has gained great experience at the highest level of college soccer and will certainly be a great addition to our backline and program.”
Her efforts as a freshman helped BYU to a 15-5-1 record and appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She played no less than 72 minutes in every game, and helped tally 10 shutouts that season.
A standout player at Viewmont High School, Johnson was a two-time First Team All-State recipient, and helped her squad to the 5A State Finals three-straight years. She was named the 2012 Region 2 MVP and team MVP, and also ran track. Johnson played club with Forza Futbol Club coached by Ryan Robinson.
