Luxury Condos Kick Off Development Of North Lamar

Published

on

Construction has been a constant around the city of Oxford in recent years, and the city’s facelift has now made its way to North Lamar. Developer Johnny Morgan has begun development on two buildings which will house 16 luxury condominiums less than a mile from the Oxford Square. Morgan feels that the location on North Lamar offers potential owners a place unlike any other around the Oxford area.
“It’s on a side of town without an inundation of student housing. We think it’s going to be a great opportunity for people to come into a more laid back environment in Oxford as opposed to a lot of condos right in the middle of the hustle and bustle.”
Morgan’s condos aren’t the only development planned in the area. According to Morgan, the FNB building will become a hotel, the old car wash will become a restaurant, and several other multi-purpose housing projects are in the works. Already within walking distance to the site of the condos are Big Bad Breakfast, Volta, Jinsei, Avent Park and several other local hot spots. Morgan is eager to watch North Lamar grow along with the rest of Oxford.
“North Lamar has been a sleeping giant in terms of the development in Oxford,” Morgan said. “You’ve gone as far out on West Jackson as you can and east and west on Highway 6. This is the last area that is close to the square, close to the centralized business district, and it has quick access to the University. We feel like it’s a great location especially when you look at the future of North Lamar. You’re fixing to see North Lamar explode and this will be one of the cornerstones of that development.”

Johnny Morgan

The land where the condos are being developed has been in Morgan’s family dating back to the late 1940’s. Originally his father opened Oxford Laundry Cleaners on University Avenue and moved it to the North Lamar location after a fire. The business was family operated until Johnny and his brother Chip decided to sell it to pursue their careers after college. Things will come full circle for Morgan as his insurance firm will move their offices into the ground floor of one of the buildings. The ground floor of each building will feature 5,649 square feet of retail and office space.
While it may seem bittersweet to tear down the existing structure, Morgan knows that it is in the best interest of the city and its image.
“This development coincides with the city’s 2037 plan. We’re taking down an older building and building something new. We’re creating a new image for North Lamar,” Morgan said. “We think it will better serve the community by updating it and keeping up with the overall plan for the city of Oxford.”

There will be three different floor plans to chose from, with options for a two or three bedroom space. Two bedroom condos will offer 1,272-1,275 square feet while the three bedrooms will range from 1,715-1,875 square feet. Amenities include stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, balcony views, wine coolers, 10-foot ceilings, and more.
The condos are expected to be completed by the summer of 2018.
