Oxford Starts 5A State Championship Tonight
The Oxford Chargers baseball team steps between the chalk this evening at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi, to take on the Pearl River Central Blue Devils for the 5A State Championship. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
Oxford (31-5) rolls into the championship after a clean sweep of New Hope in the North Half Championship. The Chargers are batting .324 as a club with an on-base percentage of .453. Out in the field, Oxford’s defense is playing with a .931 fielding percentage, and the pitching staff has a 2.46 team ERA.
Coach Chris Baughman’s club is in search of their third consecutive 5A State Championship.
Pearl River Central enters this series with a 26-11 record on the season. The Blue Devils took the South Half series from Hattiesburg.
Pearl River Central comes in with a .297 team batting average on the season, with 17 home runs and a .416 on base percentage.
The Blue Devils are led at the plate by junior Eli Lee with a .383 batting average, while driving in a total of 29 runs.
The first game of this best-of-three will start tonight at 7. Game two will be Friday at 1 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday.
