Oxford Named 13th Best 'City For Seniors To Retire'

For college students, Oxford is a popular choice because of Ole Miss. For retirees, Oxford is a popular choice because of its high quality of living, amenities and much more. The city’s dedication to building an environment suitable for senior citizens continues to pay dividends as Oxford was named as the 13th best “City For Seniors To Retire” by GoodCall.com. 
When it comes time to retire, think small and look outside the typical destinations for settling down.
“That’s a takeaway from the data crunched by GoodCall’s analysts, who reviewed 1,662 cities and towns in the U.S. and ranked them as the 2017 Best Cities for Seniors to Retire.” The report reads.

The criteria for the study was broken down into seven categories which included the following, along with Oxford’s score in each one. 
Population Age 65+ – 10.40 %
Health Care Cost (as % of national average.) – 86.45
Cost of Living (as % of national average.) – 84.99
Crime rate (per 1,000 people) – 22.4
# of Health Care Establishments (per 1,000 people) – 5.68
Amenitiess (per 1,000 people) – 0.77
Sunny Days per year – 74.6 %

Director of Oxford’s retirement attraction program Rosie Vassallo outlined what makes the quiet town such an ideal location for retirees. 
Oxford is the perfect place for seniors due to the University presence and all that it has to offer; a very appealing cost of living including affordable housing; a mild climate with four distinct seasons; a great central SE location; a superior medical community; and a progressive attitude by the local leaders,” Vassallo said.
While Oxford didn’t receive a low score in any category, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement.
“There is always room to improve,” Vassallo said. “By expanding our housing options for seniors, including retirement villages, will definitely be an added plus.”
Oxford has a resource that not every town can boast with the University of Mississippi having such a presence in the community. By incorporating the University into more seniors’ lives, Vassallo is looking forward to what the partnership can provide to retirees settling down in Oxford. 
“Continuing to expand the course curriculum available for seniors to participate in at Ole Miss is also a big competitive advantage for Oxford,” Vassallo said. “Today’s retiree is also looking for a destination with kid-friendly venues. It would create a more exciting place for children wanting to visit their grandparents thus creating tourism dollars that benefit our community.”
