Wrist Injury Ends Kelly's Pro Day Early
Without an invite to the NFL combine, today’s Pro Day was supposed to be NFL scouts first look at former Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly after suffering a torn ACL in November. Sporting a bulky knee brace, Kelly warmed up during the position drill segment of the Pro Day and began throwing to receivers. After 12 or so throws, Kelly stopped and had his wrist examined and was eventually walked off the field.
Afterward, Kelly met the media and said that he re-aggravated his wrist after initially injuring it last week while training.
“I tried pushing through it this whole week, felt good, then kind of threw one and turned my wrist over pretty hard. It felt weird, then I threw one in the flat and just didn’t fell the same, so the guys decided to call it quits for the day,” Kelly said.
Kelly was clearly unhappy not being able to participate in today’s drills in front of scouts from almost every NFL franchise, but he’s now focused on the future.
“It’s very frustrating; I’ve worked really hard for the past five months to really hone in on this day,” Kelly said. “You go through adversity, you get through it, and you can only change the future.”
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport, Kelly is scheduled to workout for scouts on April 22.
Despite the injury, Kelly mentioned that he has meetings scheduled with several teams but declined to mention those teams by name. With a lot of questions off-the-field, Kelly talked about what he feels he can offer an NFL franchise.
“You’re getting a great leader, hard worker, and a guy that doesn’t ever give up no matter what the situation is. Not only that, you’re getting a guy that has an arm that can throw it all over the field,” Kelly said. “At the end of the day, I just want to show them that I’m a mature quarterback that can lead a franchise.”
Kelly’s scheduled workout is just five days before the start of the 2017 NFL Draft. The Draft will begin Thursday, April 27.
