Brett Young: First A Rebel, Now A Country Music Star

These days, Brett Young is climbing up the country music charts with hit songs such as “In Case You Didn’t Know” and “Sleep Without You.” But before becoming a household name in country music, he was a pitcher for the Ole Miss Rebels. Young played just one season in Oxford and totaled two wins and two saves before transferring to Fresno State.
A standout high-school player in his home state of California, Young finished his senior season with a 15-0 record and an astounding 0.90 ERA with 130 strikeouts. Young had the chance to join the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Minnesota Twins ahead of the 1999 MLB Draft, but the future country star turned down the offer to go pro in order to accept an opportunity to play baseball for the Rebels. While packing his bags for Oxford, Young decided to leave something behind that’s important to any aspiring musician in pursuit of his baseball dreams.
“[I] left my guitar at home and just figured, if I’m going to do this, I need to focus on it,”Young told theboot.com.

After playing a year at Ole Miss and another a Fresno State, an elbow injury ultimately ended Young’s baseball career, and he decided that he would channel all to his energy back into his music. While he never made it to the MLB, Young kept pursuing his other goals and things seem to be working out just fine.
While he may not have made into our best Rebel pitchers of all time, Young is definitely one of the most notable!
