Lyons Pleads Guilty In 2013 Murder Case; Sentenced To Life Without Parole
In December 2013, Steven Wilbanks, Derrick Boone and Joseph Lyons were arrested and charged for the murder of University of Mississippi student Zacharias McClendon. Thursday, Lyons pled guilty to the murder and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the opportunity for parole by circuit court judge John Gregory.
The murder took place on County Road 140 off of College Hill Road at McClendon’s apartment. Boone pled guilty to his charges in April 2016. The trial lasted four days before Boone entered his guilty plea. Despite arguing that he was not directly responsible for the murder because he didn’t pull the trigger, Boone was also sentenced to life in prison without parole.
During Boone’s trial, Wilbanks confessed that he and Lyons were under the influence of LSD and marijuana when the murder occurred.
Wilbanks has yet to stand trial or plead guilty.
