Funding Concerns Put Oxford Activity Center In Jeopardy
Last month,a the City of Oxford received a General Obligation Bond in an amount not to exceed $15 million. According to the Board of Alderman’s agenda, the money is set to be used “for the purpose of erecting municipal buildings, infrastructure improvements, repairs to municipal buildings, equipping same, and various other improvements to municipal facilities.”
Half of the money is set to go to the Oxford Activity Center, which is set to be rebuilt behind its current location on Molly Barr Road. The amount of $7.5 million was agreed upon before the design was complete. The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors have pledged $1 million toward the project as well. Since then, new challenges have risen in the project, which may hinder its ability to progress.
Community relations director for the Oxford Park Commission, John Davis, told HottyToddy.com that up to $2 million in additional funding may be needed to clear debris discovered by geotechnical engineers underneath the dirt of the site. According to Oxford director of public works, Bart Robinson, it has not yet been determined how the city will proceed. Davis hopes the city can come up with a solution to keep the project moving forward.
“We’re not at a stand still, but things are fluid right now, and we wish they were a bit more solid,” Davis said. “The activity center opened in 1976, so this has been a want and a need for a lot of people for a while. Now the Board of Alderman has to decide what they want to do.”
The bond doesn’t have to end up at the $15 million limit, and if an agreement can’t be reached, the money won’t be issued. The two other projects set to benefit from the bond are infrastructure improvements to Oxford. West Oxford Loop will be extended and Sisk Avenue will be renovated to help traffic flow.
