Lafayette Girls Basketball Claims 4A State Crown Over Ripley
On Thursday night, the Lafayette Lady Commodores claimed their second state championship title in program history. The Commodores defeated Ripley 55-45 in the 4A state game.
This is the first title for the Lady Dore’s in 35 years, with the last one coming in 1982.
Lafayette closed out the 2016-17 state title run with an overall record of 30-3. The Commodores and the Ripley Tigers met two previous times this season, with the Commodores coming out on top each time.
Lafayette jumped out to an early lead in the game by taking a 17-8 score into the second quarter. Ripley outscored the Commodores 15-12 in the second quarter. Going into the locker rooms at the half, Lafayette had a 32-20 advantage with two quarters until the champion was crowned.
A strong second half on both ends of the floor put the Commodores in the lead, and they didn’t let go. Unable to keep pace, the Tigers faded late in the game, and Lafayette took home the hardware.
The Commodores were led in scoring by senior Shaniyah Buford, who scored a game-high 24 points while also pulling in four rebounds. Her teammate Mariah Holland added 13 points to secure the victory. Holland and Buford were the only to Dores to score double figures.
