Ole Miss Set To Begin Women's SEC Tournament Against LSU
On Sunday afternoon, the Ole Miss Women’s Basketball team closed out their regular season with a 62-49 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies.
The Rebels (17-12) now turn their attention to the SEC tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, where they are the No. 10 seed and will square off against the No. 7 seed LSU Tigers in the second round on Thursday night at 5 p.m. CT. This the first time since 2014-15 that Ole Miss has gotten a first round bye in the tournament.
Coach Matt Insell’s squad this season is led on the floor by Shandricka Sessom and Madinah Muhammad. Muhammad leads the way with 13.4 points per game while Sessom isn’t far behind with 12.7 points per game.
LSU enters the SEC Tournament with a 19-10 record after defeating Vanderbilt, 64-58 on Sunday in Baton Rouge. Raigyne Moncrief, who is averaging 15.9 points per game, lead the Tigers while Chloe Jackson is contributing 12.9 points per game.
Moncrief also leads the way on the boards with 6.2 rebounds while Alexis Hyder and Ayana Mitchell are adding 5.4 rebounds per game. The Tigers enter the tournament with a 3-3 record in their last six games and averaging 63.9 points per game to go with 33.4 rebounds per game.
Earlier this season, the Tigers defeated the Rebels 61-52 in Oxford on Feb. 9. The last time Ole Miss and LSU squared off in the SEC Tournament was in 2008 with the Bayou Bengals winning 80-36. All of the previous matchups between these two in the conference tournament have all come in the second round.
The winner will move on to play the No. 2 seed Mississippi State on Friday evening at 5 p.m. CT. Should Ole Miss lose, they will wait to see if they are selected to the play in the postseason. The NCAA and postseason WNIT will make their selections on March 13.
